Phasing out of cheques by 30 June 2019

The Payments Association of Namibia issued an official notice to inform the public that cheques will be phased out as a payment instrument within the National Payment System by 30 June 2019.

The Namibian banking industry, together with the Bank of Namibia, is committed to the process of phasing out cheques and the public should take note of the following events and action.

• 1 January 2019: Last day for all banking institutions to issue cheque books to clients
• 1 February 2019: Last day for customers to write out cheques as payment method
• 24 June 2019: Last day to deposit cheques at any financial institutions, provided the cheque is dated on or before 1 February 2019. No financial institution will accept cheques for processing from 25 June 2019 onwards.
• 29 June 2019: Last day for interbank clearing of a cheque as payment instrument
